Katja Esser is a visual and performance
artist who uses mask, dance, sound
and ritual to awaken the deep story
we carry in our bones.
The Keeper
Having been raised in a village in the Netherlands, moving to the US was a difficult transition for ritual keeper, Katja Esser. Life became about survival and loss of identity in an environment that felt uncaring and confusing. All the celebrations and rituals had fallen away.
After reading a quote by Sun Bear that said, “If you do not like the world in which you live, create one you like!”, Katja began to create her own rituals. She has been studying with Malidoma Somé since 1998. By calling upon and merging her creative abilities, passion, and natural resources, she launched herself into the world of sound, movement, mask, and ritual.
Katja’s creative expressions include twine and acrylic art on rice paper; greeting cards; West African photography; music; and masks. In addition to the rituals she offers, Katja is available to be commissioned to create rituals for special occasions.
