When participating in a sweat, make certain that the lodge has been built by people who are experienced in constructing sweat lodges, and that the ceremony is being led by a properly trained and authorized ceremonial leader.
The Sun Dance is a ceremony practiced by a many indigenous tribes, each with its own distinct practices and ceremonial protocols. Included are specific dances and songs passed down through the generations, the use of traditional drums, the sacred pipe, tobacco offerings, praying and fasting. In some cases, there is a ritual piercing of skin on the chest or back for the men, and arms for the women.
The object of the Sun Dance practice is to make a sacrifice to the Great Mystery, and to pray while connected to the Tree of Life, a direct connection to the Creator.
