The drum can be found at the core of most music and dance, rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. The drum is used to enhance the mood, hold the energy of the space, create a sense of community, focus the mind, and inspire transformational states of consciousness.
The Drum
The C.S.ONE Community Drum
An offering by Cliff Madru, C.S.ONE's Spirit-of-the-Drum Keeper
The drum gives us so much. It is a sacred part of our lives and community. The drum speaks in code and has been used throughout the ages as a form of self expression, to warn others of danger, broadcast special events, issue invitations and track the passage of time.
The primal heartbeat of the drum has been found to be grounding, liberating and empowering. Recent studies have shown that drumming is actually healthy for you because it reduces stress, increases your white blood cell count, and strengthens your body's immune system.
Every drum contains the energy of the animal and plant (whose bodies were used to create the instrument) as well as the drum maker and keeper, and therefore represents the cycle of life.
I chose a special drum created by John Archuleta to be the C.S.ONE Community Drum because of my attachment to its wonderful energy and story. In 2007 I drove to Taos, New Mexico, to spend some time with my drum maker friend John Archuleta and to pick up several drums he had made for me. This one particular gathering drum was still in the drying process when I drove it back home. The difference in altitude and climate caused the drum to go flat. (It had lost its voice). John guided me by phone through the process of rebuilding the drum, which gave the drum a new life and voice. (continue)
