Traditionally, an Earth Lodge is a semi-subterranean building covered partially or completely with earth, best known from the American Indian cultures of the Great Plains and Eastern Woodlands. Although the earliest lodges were rectangular in shape, later the construction was usually circular with a dome-like roof, often with a central or slightly offset smoke hole at the apex of the dome. As strictly a means of shelter, the earth covering acted as insulation, and the supporting posts gave strength to the roofs.
In addition to practicality, the construction of Earth Lodges also reflected the beliefs and spiritual practices of the tribe. The Hidatsa, for example, regarded the earth lodge as a living entity, believing it’s spirit lived in the central beams, while for the Pawnee, each lodge "was at the same time the universe and also the womb of a woman, and the household activities represented her reproductive powers.” With such a diverse "tribe" of C.S.ONE explorers, the beliefs and practices shared in our Earth Lodge reflect that diversity.
