The chakras (pronounced chock-rahs) - or energy centers - are part of a system that regulates the body’s energy intake and distribution. Every chakra affects and is affected by the health and functioning of both the physical and psychological bodies.
Although an expanded system of both major and minor chakras have been recognized, most eastern traditions describe a sevenfold major chakra system located along the line of the spinal column. The word chakra means “spinning wheel of light”.
Your thoughts and emotions are interrelated with the energy centers and affect your physical state of being. Emotional upset due to trauma, abuse, conflict, neglect, loss, stress, anxiety, fear and past programming (1) all create blockages and obstruct the energy flow to and from the chakras. The Root Chakra, for example, is related to self-preservation. If the chakra is open you feel grounded, stable, and secure. If there is a blockage in this chakra you might easily feel unwelcome, become obsessed with your own security, and you may resist change. This could also manifest in the physical body causing pain and dysfunction in the legs or feet, signifying a sense of helplessness to move forward in your life.
1. Past programming refers to emotional, behavioral, and situational programs that develop and get imprinted in your DNA due to - among other things, karma, as well as traumatizing events and other experiences that occurred in your past and/or in your past lives.
