Although it is often confused with a maze, the labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is like a puzzle or a problem you have to solve. It has twists, turns and blind alleys, and there are many choices to be made. A labyrinth, however, has only one path. The way in is also the way out, with the center being the halfway point. There are no blind alleys or dead ends along the way. With a labyrinth there is only one choice to be made - to enter or not.
The labyrinth is a metaphor for life’s journey. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Walking the labyrinth can be thought of as a pilgrimage to your own center and back out again, with a broadened understanding of who you are, who you wish to become, and the actions you must take to get there. As you walk the path of the labyrinth you re-discover yourself and gain a sense of inner peace and harmony.
Although at first the pathway in a labyrinth appears to be leading you directly to the center, you soon discover there is a detour. As you continue, each turn seems to take you further from your goal. You’re led away from the center, then closer again, and then away. You may think you're going in the wrong direction, but on a labyrinth you can’t get lost. Just as in life, you’re always right where you need to be, even if it doesn’t seem that way at the present time.
A labyrinth walk requires your commitment to the journey - just keep on going and don’t turn back. The labyrinth is a reminder that life itself never takes you straight to your goal. Despite the twists and turns, highs and lows, and times of feeling lost, life is always teaching what you need to learn. A labyrinth walk can be as intense or relaxing as you wish it to be. You need only to set your intention and enter the space with an open heart.
